Victorian Pencil Gadget Cane- London Brigg 1901

Only
!

The Victorian pencil gadget cane

Many collector's refer to this cane as the 'rent / debt collectors cane'

Made by the London maker Brigg -stamped on the top pencil insertion plate and lower band collar.

The band collar and silver casing on pencil holds the silver markings for London 1901 Sterling Standard Silver. The silversmith’s mark being CD which suggest Charles Henry Dumenil of London. There are no silver markings on the  top insertion plate.

The cane made from step bamboo. The crook area holds three copper wired rings above and below the pencil insert. The pencil insert collar has been damaged in it's early years together with some of the surounding wood, yet this has been very well restored and requires close examination to find.

Cane Condition: the bamboo cane is in excellent condition with appropriate wear for age - this is possible due to years of application of lacquer,  which has also been coated over the silver areas including the silver pencil casing This means of protecting a cane, does suggest that the cane went with the job rather than being owned by one individual.

Length: 85cm

The cane arrived with a rubber ferrule - this has been replaced with a steel tipped metal ferrule

Silver condition: The silver cane banding is in excellent condition free from breaks or cracks. The pencil itself is in excellent condition and appears to be unused after  retirement. However, the silver case of the pencil has two indents- possibly the rent collector had a door shut on the pencil !

A lovely cane with loads of history

Art Deco Compass Collectors Gadget Walking Stick 1900 -1930

Only

.

Art Deco Compass Collectors Gadget Walking Stick 1900 -1930

The cane is made from one-piece ‘black palm’ wood. An exotic wood that has some unusual characteristics.

Firstly, the colouration of the grain is a dark red brown with distinctive hard black streaks. Secondly, when viewing the area where the compass is held, the end grain looks spotted or like a hammered leather effect. It is this end grain, which was highly sought after during the Art Deco period for specialist objects of art. Black and red palm wood is an exotic species of wood that is held to be very difficult to work with due to its density.  The style and construction of this cane fits perfectly in  the Art Deco period 1900 – 1930’s

Condition:

Cane: The cane is excellent condition for it's age, free from breaks, cracks or restoration. There is some slight wood chips running down the length of the cane, however only found on close inspection. The base of the cane is fitted with a brass collar.

Compass: the compass is sunk tightly into the wood and is a good working example. Free from cracks, breaks and no evidence of  restoration.

Length: 86cm

Compass Size: 1.4 cm diameter

Width on Top Pommel: 3cm diameter

Base Diameter:1.25cm

A very special slim line  gadget cane

Child's Animal Horn Segmented Cane

This is a very neat little  Victorian - Early Edwardian animal horn segmented cane.

The handle of the cane is carved from one piece cow horn into the shape of a pony's hoof and lower leg.The shaft of the cane made up of horn segments and  mounted on a metal rod.

The base of the cane nicely finished with a horn ferrule.

The carving of the handle  does suggest the cane has been made for use by a child. Alternatively, due to the length there is a suggestion that the cane was designed as a teacher's pointer cane.

Condition: Horn canes with age are becoming increasingly difficult to find in one piece. This cane has everything in place including the original ferrule. However, some of the horn down the shaft  has experienced expansion lines.

Length:73cm

The shaft is free from breaks, cracks or splits. The base of the stick does not hold a ferrule nor appears ever to have held one( tiny old wood chip at the base) - this likely due to the strength of the wood and the distictive style

Rosewood Folk Flute Gadget Cane - Hawkes & Son London

POA
!

Background History

This rosewood folk flute gadget cane is not only unique but steeped in history with a great pedigree in the world of music. With a highly powered eyeglass one can see the remains of the engraved wording on the cane shaft:

Hawkes & Son

Denman Street

Piccadily Circus

London

William Henry Hawkes (1830-1900), a state trumpet player for Queen Victoria, retired from service and joined forces with the French bandmaster Jules Rivière.  The company formed in 1865, specialising in military instruments, accessories and sheet music, trading across the British Empire. The closest competitor of the time being  Boosey & Sons.

Research indicates that Hawkes & Son expanded into woodwind instruments in the early 20th Century and further developing by building a factory in  North London in 1925 for the production of musical instruments.

A merger in 1930 between two competitors created Boosey & Hawkes, one of the world's leading brass & woodwind companies in the 20th Century.

Changing directions of Boosey & Hawks led the company to sell the instrument division to concentrate solely on it’s music publishing interests in 2003

Research suggests the folk flute cane was made between  1910 – 1920. The flute and shaft made from rosewood, while the pommel formed from mahogany with a silver top decorative button plate (suggested silver - although not tested nor marked as such).

The wear on the makers mark together with the patina on the shaft suggests this cane has been regularly played during its lifetime. The cane has been examined by a musical instrument dealer and verifies that the flute is a working example.

To be played the cane has to be dismantled from the bottom shaft section.

The top shaft section is easily removed for cleaning etc

Condition: the cane is in excellent condition yet showing appropriate wear for age. There is no evidence of cracks, breaks or restoration being undertaken in the past. The metal ferrule on the base of the cane appears to be the original

Length of cane fully assembled: 95cm

Pommel Diameter:3.5cm

Top Shaft Diameter: 2cm

Base Cane Diameter: 1.5cm

An excellent example of a unique systems musical cane for the serious collector

The glasses decorated with mother of pearl and brass which is consistent with with the upper supporting cane shaft. The shaft extends and the glasses are moved  over in order to view the opera or theatre event. The shaft of the cane made of hardwood and black laquered - ending in brass ferrule

Length: 88cm

Condition of Cane: the cane is in excellent condition- free from breaks or cracks.Evaluation suggests the wood has been re-laquered  at some point, likely to be in keeping with the excellence of the opera glasses. The mother of pearl decoration  is all in place with some minor friction cracks which would have been caused by allowing the cane to drop.

Condition Opera Glasses: All mother of pearl in tact. The glasses work with ease. The left hand glass has been built up slightly higher with a chrome collar , yet is in keeping with the cane.

!

Victorian Snuff Box Gadget Cane With Silver Band

This a very good quality Victorian snuff box cane with a deep silver collar, Hallmarked Chester 1899.  The silversmith’s mark is evident, but not sufficiently crisp in detail, to determine the maker.

The monogrammed snuff box is formed from cow horn with brass pins, together with a top opening lid also in cow horn with what appears to be brass hinge.

Condition:

The cane length, snuff box and silver band are all in excellent condition free from breaks, crack or restoration. The snuff box lid itself in excellent condition. However, the horn attached to the brass hinge  is worn at either end. Therefore, usable but delicate. Please see gallery pictures for further details.

Evidently the base ferrule has been replaced at some point and does hold a minor crack, but should last a further 50 years without needing  to be replaced!

More than likely this has been a commisioned cane for a Gentry farmer of the Victorian period, that just loved his snuff.

Width of snuff box: 7cm

Depth of Snuff Box: 4cm

Height of snuff box :1.5cm

Victorian Silver Buckle Cane

Only
!

Victorian Silver Buckle Cane 1893 - Lignum Vitae

This is a very simple, yet very stunning collectors cane. A cane that if put in use, rather than a collection  today would look just as good in another 100 years.

The silver buckle indicating Victorian - 1893 Birmingham. As the pictures show the hallmarks are well worn but suggest the silversmith being either James Swann or John Silverston also from Birmingham. The buckle having a well worn decoration - monogram

The most interesting part of the cane is the wood. The hard dense wood grain together with the strength and weight indicates that the shaft has been formed from Lignum Vitae. A wood commonly used in the past for police trunchions, together with lawn bowls, coquet mallets, skittles and many more items in past engineering and clock making.

Condition: The cane is in excellent condition. There is minor bruising to the wood here and there which needs to be searched for. However,  no cracks, breaks or restoration. What appears to be the original ferrule is also in place and firm.
